A series of cold fronts in close succession crossed through West Virginia around the middle of the calendar month. Excessive rainfall resulted in impassable roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas, as well as a rise in local rivers, creeks, and streams. The Ohio River rose out of its banks near Huntington on the morning of the 14th and remained in that state for the next 24 hours.
