A mid-level cold pool provided the instability for scattered severe thunderstorms, with large hail and damaging winds in western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut during the mid-afternoon hours. Franklin County, MA was particularly hard-hit by damaging winds. Also, wind shear helped trigger some near-severe storms with hail and heavy rain in southeast Massachusetts.
