A frontal boundary was stalled across the Central Appalachians, with a convergence boundary also located across the eastern portion of Kentucky. These boundaries combined with afternoon heating/moisture to produce showers and thunderstorms, which propogated into far eastern Kentucky. Even heading into the late evening hours, instability was still sufficient enough to keep storms strong, producing heavy rain and wind gusts.
