A sharp short wave trough embedded within a broad upper level trough over the northeastern U.S. supported a wave of convection that moved across the entire area. A precipitable water value of 1.65 inches was observed on the KBUF sounding, and models suggested over 2 inches in portions of the area. This combined with an incoming mesoscale convective vortex to drive slow-moving and heavy rain-producing thunderstorms.
