A weak area of high pressure was centered over eastern New Mexico on August 31, 2021, which allowed for a weak monsoon moisture plume to begin to develop across the area. Moisture values were highest across southern New Mexico, and as daytime heating destabilized the atmosphere, a typical monsoon day was observed across much of northern and central New Mexico.
