Thunderstorms developed across Surry County, NC ahead of a cold front sinking southward across Virginia during the afternoon and evening of July 18th. Deep instability was supported by surface temperatures warming into the upper 80s and low 90s, with surface-based CAPE values rising as high as 2,000 J/Kg by 4 pm.
