Zone X (Shaded), also called Zone B on older maps, represents areas with a 0.2% annual chance of flooding — the 500-year floodplain. While moderate-risk, these areas can and do flood.
Properties in shaded X zones may also include areas protected by levees or areas where shallow flooding could occur. Many homeowners in these zones choose to purchase flood insurance, and it is available at reduced rates.
Flood insurance is not required but is strongly recommended. Preferred Risk Policies offer affordable coverage for moderate-risk zones.
