An abnormal mid August weather pattern brought a large area of rain and thunderstorms to a large portion of the region. This activity brought locally heavy rain and some flash flooding to some areas along with a few isolated severe thunderstorms during the afternoon hours.

A front arrived on the 13th, and settled into the state from Missouri. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developed along the front from the late afternoon into the early morning hours of the 14th. Precipitation was concentrated across the western half of Arkansas.

Tropical Depression Gustav entered the southwest corner of Arkansas on the evening of the 2nd and lingered in the southwest part of the state for nearly 24 hours. By mid-evening on the 3rd, Gustav was about 75 miles west of Little Rock.
