A slow-moving thunderstorm developed along a stationary front stretching across Appomattox County on the afternoon of July 16th. Surface analysis just prior to the thunderstorm indicated precipitable water values in the area around 1.5 inches, while deep instability was present per surface-based CAPE in excess of 3,000 J/Kg.
