A northwest to southeast oriented cold front drifted into the area as an upper level disturbance moved southeast across the region. Thunderstorms initiated along the boundary during the morning, producing torrential downpours northern parts of the Washington metropolitan area. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches in under 3 hours were enough to produce flash flooding.
