Flash Flood — Keya Paha, NE

May 5, 2007

Severe thunderstorms developed during the early morning hours and continued throughout the morning producing several reports of hail and some flash flooding. During the afternoon, tornadic supercells developed leading to reports of tornadoes, hail and flash flooding which continued into the early evening.

Several days of temperatures above freezing caused snow to melt and ice to break up on Ponca Creek and Keya Paha River in northcentral Nebraska. The extra runoff from snowmelt combined with ice jams along the waterways caused flooding from Bristow east to the Boyd County line.
