High spring astronomical tides combined with low pressure off the east coast of Massachusetts to produce coastal flooding. This unseasonable coastal low pressure contributed to the flooding lasting through multiple tide cycles. Accompanying the low pressure was rainfall that further intensified the flooding, with the coastal contribution making it difficult for freshwater flooding to drain.
