Flood — Beauregard, LA

Mar 4, 2001

The Sabine River had a major flood in early March, cresting five to six feet above flood stage betwen the 9th and 11th. Significant erosion occurred on the river bank, and many homes and camps immediately on the river had water enter them. Many roads leading to the river were damaged from the rapidly moving water. Most of the damage occurred along the rivernear Burr Ferry and Merryville.

A tropical wave moved into the Caribbean in early October and became a tropical depression by the 5th. The system quickly gained strength and obtained category 4 status before shear weakened it back to a category 2.

Harvey moved across the Gulf of Mexico into the central Texas Coast during the last week of August. After the initial landfall, the cyclone moved back into the gulf a couple days later and then made another landfall in Southwest Louisiana during the morning of the 30th.

A mesoscale convective vortex interacted with a weak cold front over the the southeast states and northeast Gulf of Mexico. The surface low that developed moved southwest across the gulf then northwest into the south central Louisiana coast.
