Flood — Upper Yampa River Basin, CO

May 21, 2005

Warm spring temperatures resulted in rapid melting of the snowpack which caused flooding along Elk Creek near Milner in Routt County. Flood waters 8 inches deep inundated portions of County Roads 42 and 44. The water washed out a 200 foot stretch of the unpaved County Road 42. Some agricultural and pasture land was also flooded. This flood event continued into the month of June. For a continuation please see the June 2005 Storm Data publication.

Rainfall combined with rapid snow melt to cause the Yampa River to rise above flood stage. Several ranches and farm buildings adjacent to the river were flooded with up to 4 feet of water.

Upper Yampa River Basin, CO · May 30, 2000

During the spring snowmelt, a large tree fell into the Yampa River and floated downstream, lodging against a pedestrian bridge on the west end of Steamboat Springs. Water dammed up behind the tree and the bridge, and poured over the river bank on the north side of the river.
