Strong afternoon heating and a very moist airmass combined to produce a very unstable atmosphere by the afternoon of the 24th. A weak cold front and an outflow boundary from strong overnight storms across the Tennessee Valley pushed south into the state resulting in widespread strong to severe thunderstorms.
