Flash Flood — Park, WY

May 15, 2015

Moisture and instability ahead of an upper level low allowed for afternoon thunderstorms to develop across portions of central and northern Wyoming. Many of the storms were moving south to north within the counter-clockwise rotation of the low. Heavy rain, small hail, and funnel clouds were all observed in the Wind River and Big Horn basins.

After an exceptionally snowy winter and cool spring, warming temperatures brought rapid snow melt to the Absarokas. In addition, locally heavy rain fell helping speed the melting of snow. As a result, the South Fork of the Shoshone River rose rapidly and flooded.
