A potent upper level shortwave trough was located over the eastern Great Lakes and headed eastward towards upstate New York on Friday, July 1st. In addition, a surface cold front associated with this feature was located west to the area and headed east for the afternoon into the evening hours. A southerly flow ahead of these features brought a warm and humid air mass to the region, allowing for the atmosphere to be unstable.
