An unseasonably warm and humid air mass developed across the lower Ohio Valley toward late April 2017. A powerful storm system across the central Plains brought several rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms to the region. Damaging winds and large hail occurred late on April 28 and into the morning hours April 29. Widespread rainfall of 3 to 6 inches fell across southern Indiana, resulting in flash flooding in some places.
