Thunderstorms developed across the higher terrain of eastern Arizona during the afternoon hours on July 9th, and they gradually spread westward and into the lower elevations of south-central Arizona during the evening hours. Some of the stronger thunderstorms generated intense rainfall with peak rain rates approaching 2 inches per hour.
