A very warm and humid air mass was in place across western and north central New York. As is usually the case with an approaching cold front, thunderstorms fired up along a pre-frontal boundary that extended from the Lake Erie shoreline northeast to Rochester. As the storms grew northeast along this boundary, they eventually encountered an outflow boundary pushing south from Lake Ontario. The intersecting boundaries fueled more impressive storms.
