A low pressure system deepened rapidly as it moved from southwest Kansas to southwest Missouri to southern Illinois. Strong to severe storms that developed over northern Oklahoma and central Kansas around midnight on the 17th pushed eastward into southeast Kansas and western Missouri by daybreak.
