Scattered thunderstorms with torrential rainfall formed during the peak heating of the afternoon. The storms formed along a weak front oriented from northwest to southeast from east central Missouri into southwest Kentucky and middle Tennessee. High atmospheric moisture content and weak steering winds aloft caused these slow-moving storms to dump torrential rain.
