The interaction between a cold frontal boundary and the remnants of Tropical Storm Tammy resulted in tremendous rainfall throughout most southern and coastal Maine. Rainfall amounts ranged from around 2 inches in the mountains to 11.92 inches at Brunswick.

Heavy rain from a series of thunderstorms fell in steep terrain and caused flash flooding. Rainfall estimates from Doppler RADAR indicated that 6 to 8 inches of rain fell in 3 hours. The most damage occurred in Bethel where a reservoir on Chapman Brook was destroyed.

Low pressure intensified as it slowly moved up the east coast on the 26th of December and into the Gulf of Maine on the 27th. The slow movement allowed for a two to three foot storm surge on top of the normal astronomical tides.
