Widespread flooding continued from April into May across southeast Missouri. Following excessive rain in April, a final dose of heavy rain came between April 30 and May 2. Numerous rounds of showers and thunderstorms produced additional average rainfall amounts of 4 to 6 inches.

The Mississippi River began its upward trend toward historic flooding. The river rose above flood stage late in the month. A series of heavy rainfall events gradually forced the river upward at an unsteady rate. The river continued rising past the end of the month.

A low pressure system moved east into the Great Lakes region on June 4th, dragging a frontal boundary into the Mississippi River Valley Region. Some scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across areas south of I 80 during the late afternoon and evening.

Thunderstorms containing very heavy rainfall over West Central Missouri on October 4th resulted in several episodes of major flash flooding. The most deadly and costly flooding occurred in Jackson County where nine people lost their lives on the evening of October 4th.

Rainfall estimated as high as 6 inches caused widespread flash flooding across the area. Numerous roads became impassable as nearly every creek and small stream flooded. Two men suffered minor injuries near Hurdland in Knox County when they drove their truck into a flooded road.

An unusual mid winter tornado outbreak occurred over southwest and central Missouri. 31 tornadoes struck the region within a 15 hour time frame on 7 January into early morning 8 January. Two tornadoes intensified to EF-3 status while five tornadoes caused EF-2 damage.

Repeated development of storms along and north of an advancing warm front led to a large swath of greater than three inches of rain south of a line from Stockton to West Plains. This excessive rain occurred on wet soil conditions from record rainfall in February and March.

The Mississippi River was above flood stage all month at Cape Girardeau. It crested at 40.6 feet on May 17, which is 8.6 feet over flood stage at Cape Girardeau. Most of the damage was to cropland.
