Flash Flood — Huerfano, CO

A boundary stalled out over the plains and resulted in the development of strong storms. Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms produced some flash flooding in Huerfano and Pueblo Counties. Isolated stronger storms (sub-severe) also developed further west over Saguache County, resulting in some hail (below severe criteria) and a brief landspout was also reported.

A severe thunderstorm developed just north of the region and drifted into northern El Paso County on the evening of September 6th. As the storm moved towards I-25 it began to produce large hail. One report of quarter size hail was sent by a trained spotter.

A flash flood occurred on Bear Creek on the north face of East Spanish Peak. The flood waters moved through the Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch. The evacuation of 96 people was accomplished through the flood waters. A cabin and maintenance building were flooded.

During the afternoon hours of July 1st very heavy monsoonal thunderstorms developed over the high terrain of the Sawatch, Wet, and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges and then drifted east towards the southern Colorado plains.
