A violent thunderstorm moved across the county, dumping torrential downpours on ground that was already soaked by heavy rain earlier in the day. Over five inches of rain fell at Paducah for the day. Heavy rains caused part of the roof at Paducah Middle School to cave in.

Around 0200E, convection refired in eastern Kentucky, just ahead of a slow moving cold front that was sinking south. The small cluster of showers and thunderstorms trained along the Greenup and Boyd County line. The heaviest rain fell on the Greenup County side of the border.

Persistent thunderstorms resulted in a narrow band of 5 to 6 inch rainfall amounts from near Fulton to Paducah. Around 5.5 inches fell at the Paducah National Weather Service office in about 5 hours. Widespread flash flooding of roads and creeks occurred.

An early morning thunderstorm on August 5th brought heavy rain that briefly closed State Highway 70 in Barren County. Later that afternoon, slow moving thunderstorms developed in a moisture rich air mass ahead of a cold front that was moving south across southern Indiana.

A warm front over the lower Ohio Valley produced numerous training thunderstorms over north central Kentucky during the morning and early afternoon. A cold front brought more heavy rain to north central and east central Kentucky during the afternoon and evening.

The Ohio River rose above flood stage at Paducah on May 7 and did not return below flood stage until May 29. It crested at 44.1 feet on May 13, several feet above the flood stage of 39 feet. Most of the damage was due to submerged cropland.

About 6 inches of rain within 48 hours caused flash flooding of roads and streams. Minor flooding of a nursing home was reported.Only a few evacuations were necessary. U.S. 45 was closed by high water between Water Valley and Wingo.

Minor flooding of the Ohio River occurred at the end of the month. At J.T. Myers Lock and Dam near Uniontown, the river rose above flood stage on the 30th. Some flooding of low-lying bottomlands occurred. Kentucky 667 in Union County was closed due to high river water.
